5 tips to declutter your wardrobe

tired of a cluttered closet? these five quick and easy tips will help you declutter and organise your wardrobe, making it simpler to find what you need. learn how to declutter your closet fast, create an organised wardrobe, and save time getting ready with these helpful decluttering tips.

1. set aside a fixed time to declutter

decluttering your wardrobe can feel overwhelming when you're not mentally prepared for it. allocate 2-4 hours to get it done in one go, or break it up into hourly sessions on the weekend for a month.

2. the "one in, one out" rule

to prevent your closet from getting too dense, adopt the "one in, one out" rule. before you add a new item to your wardrobe, remove and discard an old one. this simple practice helps you think more about what you buy. it also keeps clutter away. this way, your closet stays a curated collection instead of just a storage space.

3. take everything it out and categorise it

sort out the clothes by tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear. then get rid of anything that you haven't worn in a year, or you've found difficult to wear (i.e needs dry cleaning, is too big/small, requires special underwear you don't even have). stuff that is sentimental goes into a box, it doesn't take up precious real estate in the wardrobe. finally, check what you have a lot of - yes, we know t-shirts get comfier the more you wear them - narrow it down to just a handful.

4. pair like with like

sort your clothes into categories to make finding an outfit a breeze. organise your wardrobe by clothing type first—for example, sleeveless, short-sleeved, and long-sleeved shirts. once your clothes are sorted by category, organise each group by colour.

5. the hanger trick

ready to find out what you actually wear? turn all your hangers so the hooks face you (the "wrong" way). after you wear something, wash it, and put it back in the closet, turn the hanger to face the "normal" way. in six months, any hanger still facing the wrong way holds an item you haven't worn. it's a clear signal that it's time to donate or discard those pieces, freeing up valuable closet space.
